What is semaglutide ?

Semaglutide: Semaglutide is a medication originally developed to treat type 2 diabetes. It works by mimicking the action of a hormone called GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1), which helps regulate blood sugar levels and has been found to reduce appetite and promote weight loss.

Semaglutide acts on the GLP-1 receptors in the brain and gastrointestinal tract. This action helps to regulate appetite, reduce food intake, and increase feelings of fullness (satiety), which can lead to decreased calorie consumption and, consequently, weight loss.

Semaglutide: Semaglutide was approved by the FDA in 2021 for chronic weight management in adults. In December of 2022, the FDA also approved semaglutide as an adjunctive agent to lifestyle modifications for chronic weight management in pediatric patients 12 years or older with an initial BMI equal to or greater than the 95th percentile.

Candidates typically include individuals who have struggled to lose weight through diet and exercise alone. During your weight loss consultation, your Nurse Practitioner will evaluate your medical history and overall health to determine if semaglutide or tirzepatide is appropriate for you.

Common side effects may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, abdominal discomfort, decreased appetite, fatigue, dizziness, and headache. These side effects are usually mild to moderate and tend to improve over time as your body adjusts to the medication. Serious but rare side effects may include pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas) and gallbladder disease. It is important to discuss potential risks and benefits with your healthcare provider before starting treatment.

Clinical trials have shown that semaglutide can lead to significant weight loss when combined with lifestyle modifications (such as diet and exercise). It is important to note that long term weight loss is sustained best with modifications like a high protein/low carbohydrate diet and weight training.  Medical weight loss programs may also incorporate prescription medications like semaglutide to assist with weight management. Along with lifestyle modifications, these programs are supervised by healthcare professionals to ensure safe and effective outcomes for patients. By combining medication, diet, exercise, and professional guidance, individuals can achieve sustainable and healthy weight loss.

Results vary among individuals, but many achieve clinically meaningful weight loss of 5% or more of their initial body weight. In clinical trials, those on semaglutide lost 15% to 17% of their baseline body weight.

Treatment duration can vary based on individual response and goals. In clinical trials, participants typically took semaglutide for 52 to 68 weeks to achieve and maintain weight loss. Some people will and can elect to take a low dose of semaglutide long term for appetite suppression. Your healthcare provider will discuss a treatment plan that is tailored to your needs.

Semaglutide is approved for long-term use in weight management, and ongoing treatment may be necessary to maintain weight loss.

Semaglutide does not contain medication similar to other weight management medications like caffeine or phentermine. GLP-1 medication works slowly and effectively on the endocrine system and will not make you feel jittery.

At The Fix Clinic, you can elect to have your medication shipped to your home, or come into the office, for administration.
